Hadewych van Gent

Hadewych van Gent cello and voice
Joining us to celebrate International Women’s Day, Dutch cellist and singer Hadewych van Gent creates a distinctive and recognisable sound world of her own. An adventurous and versatile musician, she moves along the edges of the classical tradition and beyond. Her intimate and compelling performances have captivated audiences across Europe and South America.
At the age of 17, Hadewych made her solo debut at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Since then, she has performed as a soloist and chamber musician in leading venues across Europe. On several of these stages she has shared the platform with artists such as Janine Jansen, Menahem Pressler, and Max Richter.
Hadewych collaborates with some of today’s most prominent young musicians, among them cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason, with whom she worked on the release of his album, Song. Her contribution was praised by The Times as “an intoxicating invocation.” She also works with Braimah and Jeneba Kanneh-Mason and performs regularly with Decca guitarist Plínio Fernandes. She will be featured on the latest album by saxophonist Jess Gillam, to be released by Decca. These collaborations bring together musicians at the top of their field who share a passion for both the classical tradition and the exploration of genre boundaries.
Alongside her classical projects, Hadewych actively seeks collaborations beyond the classical circuit. Highlights include performances with Coldplay and Grammy-winning singer Laufey.
Driven by a strong curiosity for new sounds and forms, Hadewych is committed to expanding the repertoire for voice and cello, working closely with composers on new works. Her debut album Voice (Linn Records) explores the many ‘voices’ that shape her artistic identity. Upcoming projects include the premiere and recording of a new trio for guitar, cello, and voice by Rafael Marino Arcaro, written for her and guitarist Plínio Fernandes. Her recording career continues to expand; most recently, she appeared on an album released by Sony.
During her studies in London, Hadewych was awarded the Bicentenary Scholarship of the Royal Academy of Music, granting her a full scholarship and making her part of a line of ambassadors for the Academy. In 2025, she was nominated for the Dutch Grachtenfestival Prize, in recognition of her exceptional talent and promising artistic development.
Hadewych plays a cello by Johannes Theodorus Cuypers and a Fétique bow, made possible by the Netherlands Music Fund.
